Asahito Nanjo
GREED
SSW 813 (LP)

Leader and bassist of the cult heavy-psych japanese band HIGH RISE, Asahito NANJO started as guitarist under the name RED in the late seventies with his first experience : RED & LAPIS and have formed later many other group, such as the well-knows MAINLINER, TOHO SARA, MUSICA TRANSONIC.
In more than 25 years, “Greed” is in fact NANJO’s first solo release. Recorded in 1993 and mastered at La Musica studio 2004, with the participation of Makoto KAWABATA (guitar), Hisashi YASUDA (bass) and Nobuko EMI (drums), NANJO use the criminal guitar, effect, voice and offer two long tracks. Composed and structured in the same vein as the solar first album of ASH RA TEMPEL, “Greed” is a dark psych-fuzz esoteric album, a veneration of the black sun, who follow more deeper the musical direction taken with the mysterious OHKAMI NO JIKAN.
250 copies limited numbered vinyl only edition.

EXPOSÉ#33 – May 2006 – www.expose.org
« The latest release by Ilitch (a limited edition of 250) collects material recorded from the late ’70s right up through the present, although many of the older pieces were tweaked, modified and remixed along the way. Ilitch is Thierry Müller, French electronic/experimental composer who released a number of albums in the late ’70s and early ’80s, and has recently become active again (his latest release of all new recordings, Hors Temps/Out of time, was reviewed in #32). The first six tracks on Rainy House are the six parts of the haunting minimalist suite Chambre, a stark, introspective piece performed on an old, slightly detuned piano, accented with sonic filters, fuzz and studio treatments. A progression of several chords are played in repetition with slight variation and slow evolution, adding various effects and timing delays as it goes. Comparable at times to some of Battiato’s late ’70s minimalist work, this actually develops a lot more variation throughout its duration and is thus far more interesting. The remaining two cuts (only on the CD) seem to be of more recent vintage, the first a 15 minute workout of swirling experimental sounds and textures, where Müller is joined by Julien Blaine on voice, kazoo, and Jew's harp. The final track features several tracks of sounds coming from a skipping CD mixed together at various intervals. While Hors Temps/Out of time was a more song-based release, Rainy House embodies the more experimental side of Ilitch's work. » PETER THELEN

Michel Bulteau
& Elliott Murphy
HERO POET
SSW-811 (Mini LP)

2004 recording by this singular zig zag wan derer poet-rocker duo: Michel Bulteau, the electric soul former of the 70’s underground stone-in french group Mahogany Brain & the lost generation nomad songwriter’s Elliott Murphy. Following to their first works “Spleens” (1989), “Hero Poet” is a limited edition 5 songs mini LP : primitive modern bluesy compositions for guitar & vocals. An album for an imaginary movie soundtrack, with the insane-dark-western-in-the-snow-opening-track “Marcher dans la neige” ala Neil Young’s Dead Man. Liner notes by Elliott Murphy.

Aquarius Records – November 2006
«This may just be our new favorite record (though, it's not that new – we've had 'em here for months but they sorta slipped thru the cracks, review-wise, until now). Which is not at all what we were expecting. Not even remotely. The first solo release from ex-Acid Mothers Temple axeman and Acid Mothers Temple soul collective member Magic Aum Gigi, MMMM is not just another AMT related psych rock freakout. As much as we do dig almost everything AMT release, we are definitely filled to overflowing with their endless barrage of tripped out psychedelic rock. So it was with some trepidation that we prepared to review yet -another- Acid Mothers Temple related release, the 30th or 40th in the last year maybe. But HO-LEE SHIT! This record completely blew our minds. When we cracked this open, a big triangular insert fell out, printed on it was a circle with the words "Raga Metal" inside, and on each corner were the words "drone", "trip" and "music." And damn if that ain't exactly what this is. DRONE TRIP MUSIC. Or RAGA METAL. Both only begin to describe the blissy heaviness and abstract beauty of this disc.
Gorgeous, fuzzy Tim Hecker sort of blurry guitars, doused in tons of distortion and reverb, until the riffs are just indistinct blurs, almost like listening to My Bloody Valentine through a transistor radio under your pillow, all murky and muddy but still gloriously melodic and epic. But beyond that, the riffs and thick swirls of sound constantly drop out, glitching into brief crackling silences before stuttering back into motion, like it was recorded on some old, super degrade tape, or as if the needle keeps slipping off the vinyl or some dizzying combination of both. Like an even more lo-fi, metallicized William Basinski, or a blissed out dronier Faxed Head. It ends up being as much about the music as it does about the strange distortions and mysterious drop outs. Like some EVP transmission from beyond, rendered in fuzz guitars and looped murky rhythms. A super distorted slab of metallic dreammusic drenched in hiss and buzz and recorded onto a thrift store cassette with using a toy tape recorder with dying batteries. So goddamn beautiful. And we only have a few, and only will ever have these few, as it's on the out of print wagon now.»
